President's MessageSteve Wiley

Welcome to February! February is the month in which we turn to Punxsutawney Phil for our weather prediction (let's hope he got it right this time!) and also the month we play Cupid for those we love. It is also Black History Month, National Heart Month, Cancer Prevention Month and (no kidding) Termite Awareness Month. However, my favorite thing to celebrate every February is Lincoln's birthday. On February 12, President Lincoln would have turned 202! So let's dedicate this issue to Lincoln's birthday and to celebrations.

It seems every organization has something—a value, an ideal that they celebrate. In my role as a speaker and the host of our leadership program, I've seen quite a few! Have you thought about what your organization celebrates or even what you personally celebrate about your organization? Perhaps your organization emphasizes innovation or globalization? Maybe it is customer service or diversity? Do you most value the people in your organization? Or do you celebrate the good your organization does in the world? We see great value in taking a few minutes to identify what you think this is and then to live it every day.

Here at the Lincoln Leadership Institute, I think the thing we most celebrate are relationships. Relationships make us better leaders—and better followers. They help us reach our sales goals and give us something to cling to when times are tough. As you probably have heard me say: "It's the people business!"

So join with me this month in celebrating Lincoln's birthday and celebrating at work! Read on to learn more about some things we've been doing here at LLI and please join me in signing President Abraham Lincoln's birthday card!

Abe Lincoln on Facebook

The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site has dedicated a group on Facebook to our 16th president and his 200th birthday, which took place in 2009. The group, according to the page, "is meant to celebrate Abraham Lincoln as The Great Emancipator—who saved the Union and hastened the end to the scourge of slavery. His leadership set the course for 'a more perfect union.'"

Did You Know: No Holiday for Lincoln?

LincolnDid you know that Abraham Lincoln's birthday has never been designated as a national holiday?

Lincoln's birthday was first formally observed the year after his assassination in 1866, when Congress gathered for a memorial address. But the holiday that most of us associate with Lincoln's birthday—the third Monday in February commonly referred to as Presidents' Day—is, in actuality, a federal holiday only honoring George Washington's birthday.

One man who was dedicated to preserving Lincoln's memory was Buffalo, New York drug store owner Julius Francis. After Lincoln's assassination, Francis collected Civil War and Lincoln memorabilia and wanted the country to make Lincoln's birthday a national holiday. Francis started to host annual observances of Lincoln's birthday—seven in all, at his own expense—until he died in 1881. He twice tried to convince Congress to establish Lincoln's birthday as a holiday, but failed; however, he founded the Buffalo Lincoln's Birthday Association, which continued Francis' work.

Although a federal holiday for Lincoln's birthday does not exist, it is celebrated as a legal holiday in several states.

David and Julie Eisenhower to Visit Gettysburg for Book Signing

Going Home to GloryDavid Eisenhower and his wife Julie will be in Gettysburg February 19 to sign their book Going Home to Glory: A Memoir of Life with Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961-1969.

David Eisenhower is the grandson of Dwight D. Eisenhower, and David's sister, Susan Eisenhower, has been a past facilitator with the Lincoln Leadership Institute at Gettysburg. David's wife, Julie, is the daughter of former president Richard Nixon; she and David met at Eisenhower's second inauguration in 1957 and, years later, began dating while both were in college. They married in 1968.

The Eisenhowers' book chronicles David's childhood memories of his grandfather after Eisenhower left the White House and retired to his Gettysburg farm. David recalls the countless hours working on his grandfather's farm, traveling with him to foreign lands and, above all, simply sharing quality time with him.

In the book, Julie shares her recollections of meeting David's grandparents and their involvement with the 1968 Nixon campaign and election as president, intertwined with David's memories.

The couple will be at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center on February 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
